The Regretful Mistake He Made

By Fetina Reutov

“Ding”

Elle looks at her phone and she got a text from her boyfriend, Johnny. She opened the text and it said “I’m sorry, but I just don’t want you to be my girlfriend.”

Elle looked confused and texted him back saying,” What? You’re joking right?”

“No.”

“Wow. Ok. Breaking up with me over texting? So mature of you.”

“Yeah I know, and I’m sorry. But I still want to be friendsJ”

Elle didn’t text him back because she was just too busy sobbing. Finally she started liking somebody so much and he decides to break her heart. She stayed in bed for the next weekend doing nothing but watching movies, eating chocolate and popcorn. Trying to recover from the break-up.

Monday came around, she slept in a little bit and slowly got ready. She decided to walk to school so she could clear her mind. She came to school about half hour late and she could care less at the moment. She was acting like nothing happened, kept her head up high and kept a smile on her face. Elle’s friend saw her and she walked up to her and said, “So I heard you and Johnny are done?”

“Yup.” Is all Elle had to say.

“What happened?” asked Jennifer.

“Nothing.”

“What do you mean nothing?”

“He didn’t want to be with me anymore… OK?” Elle said it kind of too loud and felt a tear coming down her cheek. She walked away quickly to the nearest bathroom.

Jennifer stood there and said nothing. After a few seconds, she followed Elle to the bathroom.

“Elle?”

No response.

A few seconds later. “Elle?”

“What?” Elle said in a sobbing voice.

“Are you okay?”

“I’ll get over it.”

“You want to talk about it?”

Elle walked out of the bathroom stall, washed her face with some cold water, grabbed paper towels and wiped her face slowly, “Can you come over today, after school?”

“Yes, of course I can.” Jessica said, and then reached out for a hug.

For Elle the last period seemed to be passing forever. She was just staring at the clock and not really paying attention to what the teacher was saying. Remembering of what good memories she and Johnny had. The bell rang, she snapped out of her daydreaming and packed up her things and went to her locker to grab the rest of her work and out the door she went. She didn’t wait for Jessica because she thought she might be talking to somebody and she walked home alone. She came home and went to the refrigerator to make her a snack, grabbed few movies from the living room and went into her room. She got into her pajamas, turned on a movie and ate.

*Knock Knock*

“Come in,” said Elle.

Jessica walked in with a box of chocolates and said, “I brought you something,” with a smile on her face.

“Awe! You read my mind! Thank you!”

Elle just attacked the chocolate and enjoyed every bite, and of course she shared with Jessica. They talked, laughed, while they watched movies. In the end Elle realized she didn’t even think of Johnny once. She was so happy.

Minutes. Hours. Days. Months passed and she noticed herself thinking of Johnny less and less. And one day she and Jessica went to the movies and while standing in line to pay, she glanced back and she noticed a cute guy from her class was looking at her. She looked away and kind of smiled. Before going to their seats, she glanced back and again the cute guy was looking at her, and this time he smiled at her. She immediately smiled back and turned her head. They walked to the theater room and they got the very back seats because the screen was way too big to sit in the front.

Jessica said,” I want some popcorn and soda. Should have thought of it earlier. I’m going to go buy some.”

Elle stayed because they didn’t want their seats taken. The previews didn’t start yet, the music was still playing and the lights dimmed. Elle was just looking around and she looked where the entrance was, and saw that cute guy and his friend walk in the same theater room. Elle blushed a little and hoped they did not see her. But they did. They walked up her isle. He asked, “Are these seats taken?”

“Um yeah, this one is.” Elle said, pointing to the right side of her.

“How about those?” he asked, pointing to the seats on the other side of her.

“Nope. They’re all yours” Elle said with a smile.

The cute guy smiled, and sat next to her and his buddy next to him. “I saw you around school but never had a chance to meet you, I’m Dan.” He took out his hand.

“Oh yeah, I saw you around too, Elle.” They shook hands.

“And this is Trip,” he points to his friend. They shook hands. “So, where’s your friend?”

“Getting popcorn and some soda.”

“Aah, I see.”

Elle didn’t say anything and kind of was weirded out that out of all the seats, they sat next to her, but then again kind of happy. Jessica finally came back and had a whole tray with her; she sat down and whispered, “Are those the guys from our school?”

“Yeah.”

“Who are they?”

“That’s Dan, and Trip.”

Jessica smiles and says,”Oooo!”

She elbows her and says, “Shut it.” And they both laugh.

“You guys want some popcorn?” Jessica asks the boys.

“Sure.” Dan answered.

Jessica put the bucket on Elle’s lap so everybody could have an equal reach of the popcorn. The lights turned off and previews started. Elle reached out for the popcorn and so did Dan and they touched hands, Elle felt a tingle and was the first to pull away. Dan looked at her and she glanced at him and saw him smile. He must’ve felt it too, Elle thought and blushed a little bit and smiled back.

An hour and a half past and the movie ended. The lights turned on. They all walked together to their cars and said their “byes”. Before Dan walked away he said with a smile, “We should hang out sometimes.”

“Um… yeah.” Said Elle with a grin.

“Here’s her number,” said Jessica, and gave him a piece of paper with a number on it. Elle just looked at her like ”what are you doing?!” she just smiled.

“Cool, thanks! I will see you soon.” Dan walked away and his friend high fived him with a laugh.

Elle shrugged and didn’t expect to hear from him.

A few days later Elle was sitting on the couch watching TV, and her phone rang. A number she didn’t recognize. “Hhhmmm,” she thought, “Who could this be.”

“Hello?” Elle said with a confused tone.

“Hey! Is this Elle?” asked a voice she kind of recognized.

“Uumm… yes it is… who is this?”

“Oh. This is Dan,”

Silence…

“From the movies?” Dan made himself clear.

“Oh yeah! Dan! Sorry I totally blanked out on that one.”

“It’s ok.” Dan said with a chuckle,” So anyways, I was going to ask you if you would want to join me for a movie tonight?”

All Elle could think of was… what? Me? Today? Really?

“Uuhh… really?”

“Yes.” He sounded sure.

Before she knew it, she answered him saying, “Okay, I’ll go. What time?”

“How about a six?”

“OK. And should I meet you there or how are we going to do this?”

“I was thinking of picking you up? Where do you live?” asked Dan, sounding very happy.

Elle told him the address and he said, “Oh, that it’s not that far from where I live. See you soon.”

After hanging up Elle was quite confused and called her friend Jessica.

“Hey! Guess what just happened??”

“Uuhh… you tell me!” Jessica was clearly clueless.

“Dan, from the movies a few days ago. He just called me and asked if I want to go to the movies with him!!” Elle shrieked.

“OMG! No way! That’s so awesome! Well, what did you say?!” Jessica yelled on the other line.

“I said yes! And he said he will pick me up when he gets ready.”

“What are you doing talking to me? Go get yourself ready!”

“Ok,” they both laughed and hung up.

Elle hurried off to her room, opened her closet, and picked out something, put it on and made it look cute. Put on some fresh make-up, perfume and was good to go. She went to her living room, turned on the TV and waited.

Ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Elle jumped a little. She opened the door and there was standing Dan. So handsome. Smelling so good. Smiling like a gentleman and said, “Hi. So, you ready to go?”

“Yes.”

They both walked to the car and he opened the door for her. She thanked him and noticed she’s feeling nervous. He climbed in on to the driver side, started the car, turned up some tunes so it wouldn’t be too awkward.

They talked the whole way to the theater, and just bonded so well. When they came to the theater, she said it was his choice to choose a movie. But he insisted on letting her choose a movie.

“New Year’s Eve.” She said, and expected him to say “Seriously? That movie? You have got to be kidding me!”

” Awesome. I was thinking of that too.” He said surprising her.

He insisted on paying too. He bought popcorn, soda, and just went all out. Elle was surprised. They chose the seats in the back. They ate popcorn and when the movie started, the lights dimmed. Dan sat closer to Elle, put his arm around her.

”I’m glad you said yes to the date.” Dan said and smiled at her.

“Me too.” Elle said smiling.

When the movie ended, Elle took all the trash. Went to the ladies room, and came back finding him waiting for her outside the door. They walked back to the car; he took her hand and said, “We should go for a little walk.”

“OK.”

So they walked down the street, they came by a flower shop and Dan said to the clerk,” One white rose.” He gave Elle the rose and said with a smile, “For you.”

It was getting dark and they decided to walk back to the car. Suddenly they see fireworks up in the sky. “Aah this seems like the perfect moment.” Dan thought. Next, Dan kissed Elle on the lips. He pulled away and said, “I like you, Elle. We should do this again.”

Elle was shocked as any other girl would be and before she knew it she said, “That would be nice.”

They walked back to the car and held hands. They drove back with more talking in the car instead of the music blasting. At Elle’s house, Dan walked to her door. Before they said good-bye, he gave her one last kiss on the lips, and Elle watched Dan drive away.

Before Elle opened the door she heard somebody say, “Elle.”

Elle turned around and saw her ex standing there looking sad and said,”Elle, what are you doing with him?”

“I was just coming back from a date with Dan. What does it look like I’m doing?”

“Come on Elle, why him?!”

“Johnny, this is not the time. And remember, you were the one who broke up with me! So why do you care anyway?”

“Because I made a mistake, Elle. A big mistake. I’m so sorry. Please take me back. I can’t do anything without thinking about you.” He said with regret in his voice.

“Johnny, you broke my heart once and I can’t let you do that again. I’ve been through enough pain.” She felt a tear down her cheek. She turned around and walked inside started bawling and looked out the window and saw Johnny still standing there.

For the next few days, Johnny was still trying to take her back but Elle and Dan couldn`t be broken up whatever Johnny did.

Elle and Dan became High School Sweethearts and had a wonderful family. Leaving Johnny dying alone and sad.

I prosta loved your story. It sounded just like you, like your kind of attitude. “Like are you serious? breaking up with me over texting? so mature of you!” I loved that line. It sounds like you would totally say it. It would be funny if you inclued Elle saying “HA!! In your face! no your regretting your mistake. Yeah you go cry!” Haha. just my opinion. It was a cute story loved the ending because she found someone way better for her. I think every girl should deserve a guy like that! 😀
